It's summer, which means sweaty, sun, and hopefully a little more time! So, let's dive in and talk skincare!
A good skincare routine is essential to maintaining healthy, nice-looking skin as long as you use quality products. Like eating healthy foods, quality skin care ingredients can really improve your skin. Although it might take some extra time and energy during the morning and night, it's so worth it in the long run, not only for your appearance but also for your health—the skin is the biggest organ, after all!
Here are quick tips on the do's and don'ts of skincare:
Do: Wash your face!
Don't: Wear makeup to sleep
Do: Maintain a healthy lifestyle
Don't: Pop pimples
There are so many skincare products out there that it can be hard to choose which is right for you. Picking the right brand is crucial when choosing which skincare products you want to use. It might take a while to find which brand works for you based on your skin type and what products specifically work well. You'll probably have to experiment with different brands and products before you find the right one, and that’s normal!
Unfortunately, this can lead to unwanted and barely used skincare products lying around, so check in with friends and family to see if they want to sample it as well before discarding it.
Trends in sustainable products
More and more people opt for sustainable skincare with natural, organic, and plant-based ingredients. Why? There is an overwhelming trend to decrease the amount of chemicals entering our bodies, and as the skin is our largest organ, it's essential to treat it with love and care! There are also increasing trends in cruelty-free and plastic-free skincare- two additional metrics we fully support and strive for!
Organic Skincare
Organic skincare doesn't contain harmful products like the sulfates and parabens in non-organic skincare products. Parabens are chemicals used in products to prevent them from growing fungus or bacteria. Sulfates are the chemicals that cause the lathering experience, commonly used in body washes, shampoo, etc (Verb Products). These chemicals harm the body, so you should avoid them at all costs! Going organic is just better for the skin. It's gentler and won't harm your skin in the long run.
Local Hawaiian Sustainable Skincare Winner
Through Instagram, we polled our followers to find their favorite Hawaiian and national sustainable skincare brands. Read on to learn which brands were voted the best!
Oahu Organics won our sustainable skincare poll AND is one of our favorite clients! This Hawaiian-made skincare brand has mastered the “farm to face” approach.
Oahu Organics tells us, “Hawaii has the best quality air, soil & water on the planet, and we work closely with our local farmers to grow organic, sustainable crops, which we then incorporate into our skin care lines.”
They are also a model brand regarding transparency and know where every ingredient comes from! Oahu Organics is a clean skincare brand that uses 100% natural ingredients and is also paraben, sulfate, and cruelty-free. This eco-friendly business goes further by using reusable, recyclable bottles for packaging and offering many of its products in local refill shops!
Who cares about what goes on behind the scenes?
We need better-quality, clean, and eco-friendly skincare brands for the sake of everyone's skin, the environment, and even animals! Many big skincare brands are not cruelty-free, which means they test on animals. Look out for brands that are sustainable and transparent about what ingredients are in their products and how they manufacture them. You can find these details on their website, if not also through their social media channels. Struggling to find information? We suggest reaching out to the brand for clarification, and if you receive no response or even an unclear one, we believe it best to avoid that brand altogether to play it safe.
National Skincare Winner
Along with Oahu Organics, a national brand that won our poll is Pacifica Beauty! They have 100% vegan and cruelty-free beauty products, ranging from skincare and haircare to makeup and sun care. More than 85% of their PET bottles are made from 50% post-consumer recycled material, and their boxes are made from FSC-certified paper.
Making the right skincare choices
Skincare with clean and organic ingredients is the best way to heal and restore our skin without harming our bodies or the earth. As a consumer, you need to research each brand - what ingredients they use, the mission behind the brand, and how they've incorporated sustainability into their brand.
Ask around, read up on brands, and vote with your dollar!
